Captain Chuck Seader

I now know that not everyone on the Crusty Cruise Distribution list had the privilege of meeting Capt. Chuck Seader. He operated the tug Miss Joan and pushed sand and gravel barges from Port Royal to ports on the Eastern shore for use in concrete construction projects. The sand on the eastern shore can not be used due to salinity content. Chuck had a sailboat named “Indaway” and sailed on a few Crusty Cruises with us. He single handed a Bristol 26’ from the Elizabeth River up to Crisfield Md. Arghh, a true Crusty, did I mention his head was a five gallon bucket? He also gave many a tug boat tour for guests at the Summerwind, We would tie alongside the tug and explore the tug as well as the barge.

Captain Chuck was a great guy and he will surely be missed by his immediate family and by his extended family of close friends that he made in his trips up and down the Rappahannock and across the bay. He is well known in Cape Charles, Onnancock and many other ports where he delivered sand and gravel over the years.

He was quick to lend a helping hand and advice to folks that he met during his travels. He would help a total stranger in need on the water and never expect anything in return.

His constant chatter on the VHF radio during his watches was enjoyed by everyone on the channel and the folks up and down the Rappahannock were always there to chat with him during his trips. He made many friends and kept up with them during the years.
